Not All Salts Are Created Equal

The Salty Debate: Table Salt, Himalayan Salt, and the Superiority of Celtic Salt

Salt is a vital component in our daily diet, but not all salts are created equal. The differences between table salt, Himalayan salt, and Celtic salt go beyond just their appearance and taste. Let’s delve into these three types of salt to uncover their unique properties, benefits and what we should know about Salt as Christians.

1. Table Salt

  • Processing and Additives: Commercial table salt undergoes extensive refining, which strips away beneficial minerals. Moreover, additives like anti-caking agents and iodine are often introduced. These agents prevent the salt from clumping but can have unwanted side effects on health.
  • Health Implications: Excessive sodium intake from table salt can lead to high blood pressure, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

2. Himalayan Salt

  • Origin: Himalayan salt is mined from ancient sea beds in the Himalayan Mountains and is famous for its pink hue, which results from iron oxide (rust).
  • Mineral Content: It boasts 84 trace minerals, which sounds impressive, but the amounts of these minerals are minuscule and don’t contribute significantly to daily nutrient intake.
  • Popularity: The pink salt has gained popularity in recent years, being touted for its supposed health benefits, from detoxifying the body to improving respiratory diseases. However, scientific evidence backing these claims is limited.

3. Celtic Salt

  • Origins and Processing: Sourced from tidal ponds off the French coast, Celtic salt is harvested using a 2,000-year-old Celtic method, preserving its natural state and beneficial properties.
  • Mineral Richness: Celtic salt contains a broad spectrum of trace minerals, which are essential for various bodily functions. These minerals, present in higher amounts than in Himalayan salt, can aid hydration, balance body pH, and promote vascular health.
  • Texture and Taste: Its moist texture and briny taste can elevate dishes, offering a distinct flavor unmatched by other salts.
  • Environmental Benefits: Harvesting Celtic salt has minimal environmental impact, making it a sustainable choice.

Celtic Salt vs. The Rest

So, why opt for Celtic Salt over table or Himalayan salt? The answer lies in its processing, mineral content, and ecological benefits:

  1. Natural Harvesting: The age-old method of harvesting Celtic salt ensures that the salt retains its natural minerals, without the need for refining or adding chemicals.
  2. Higher Mineral Content: While both Celtic and Himalayan salts contain trace minerals, Celtic salt boasts a higher concentration, offering enhanced health benefits.
  3. Eco-friendly: The sustainable method of harvesting Celtic salt ensures minimal damage to the environment, unlike the mining processes for Himalayan salt.
  4. Authenticity: As a less commercialized product, Celtic salt often has a more authentic, pure profile, devoid of the hype and marketing tactics that surround Himalayan salt.

While table salt, Himalayan salt, and Celtic salt all serve the primary purpose of seasoning, their differences in processing, mineral content, and environmental impact make them distinct. Given its superior mineral content, natural harvesting method, and eco-friendliness, Celtic salt stands out as the healthiest and most sustainable choice among the three. Embracing Celtic salt not only benefits our health but also supports sustainable practices that have a positive impact on our planet.

Take some time today and get to know what the Father has to say about salt, the Bible is sprinkled with verses both in the Old and New Testaments.

On our journey to Biblically Clean Foods, I was reminded of My Aunt’s husband who is Jewish. When my Aunt married, she converted from Christianity to Judaism. I can remember as a child, every time we sat down to eat together, my uncle would salt his food before tasting it. It drove my Grandmother crazy. She always would say “why don’t you taste it first?” He never really replied, he just salted.

As I grew older, I began pondering this. Because it seemed automatic to him, never forced, just something he did at every meal. I learned a lot about that. I believe after reading about the Salt Covenant and all the Scriptures on salt I could find, God is trying to tell us something that is not just spiritual, but physical as well.

Job said, Can something that has no taste to it be eaten without salt?
Or is there any flavor in the white of an egg? “My soul refuses to touch them; Such things are like loathsome food to me [sickening and repugnant]. AMP Job 6:6-7
