The Benefits of Eating Homemade Butter Tortillas Instead of Bread

When choosing a staple for our meals, many gravitate towards the convenience of store-bought bread. However, swapping out your regular slice of bread for a homemade butter tortilla can introduce a world of flavor, health benefits, and versatility. Let’s delve into the advantages of this choice:

1. Freshness & Authenticity:

Making butter tortillas at home gives you control over the ingredients, ensuring they’re free from the additives, preservatives, and artificial flavors often found in store-bought alternatives. The result is a more authentic and fresh taste.

2. Nutritional Control:

With homemade tortillas, you get to choose high-quality, organic ingredients. Opting for whole wheat or other grains can increase the fiber content. Additionally, using butter, especially from grass-fed cows, delivers beneficial fats and vitamins, such as Vitamin K2.

3. Carb Count:

Carbohydrates are vital in our diet, but the amount and source of our carb intake are crucial. On average, a 8″ homemade butter tortilla contains about 12-17 grams of carbs. In contrast, two typical slices of white bread hold around 28 grams. The carb count for the tortilla is similar or even slightly lower, providing a comparable or more carb-efficient alternative.

4. Versatility in Meals:

While bread is mostly reserved for sandwiches and toast, tortillas are versatile. They’re the foundation for wraps, quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas, and even dessert rolls, making them a culinary favorite.

5. Lower Sodium:

Commercial bread can be high in sodium, which isn’t ideal for those monitoring their salt intake. In contrast, homemade tortillas allow for sodium content regulation, offering a healthier choice.

6. Digestibility:

For some, commercial bread can be taxing on the digestive system due to its additives and gluten content. Tortillas, when made with alternative flours like coconut or almond flour, can be more digestible for those with sensitivities.

7. Economic Benefits:

While the initial ingredient cost might seem higher than a loaf of bread, homemade tortillas can be more cost-effective in the long run. Making a batch of tortillas can come at a fraction of the cost of artisanal bread or specialized store-bought tortillas.

Making homemade tortillas is so much easier with an affordable Tortilla Press.

Conclusion:

Opting for homemade butter tortillas over bread not only enhances the taste and quality of your meals but also brings several health and economic benefits. Bread will always have its space in our diets, but giving tortillas their fair chance might offer a delightful and versatile culinary adventure. If you seek a more digestible option or aim to cut down on dietary additives, homemade tortillas emerge as an excellent pick.

Ingredients

  • 3 C Organic unbleached flour

  • 1 C Spring water

  • 1 Stick of butter

  • 1.5 Tsp Salt

Directions

  • In a large mixing bowl add flour and salt, mix well
  • Cut butter into tabs. Add to a 2 Cup Pyrex measuring cup with water and microwave for about 1.5 minutes until butter is almost melted. Let cool
  • Slowly add to flour, mixing by hand
  • Knead until dough pulls away from bowl side and your hands
  • Divide into balls, if you have a scale, a 4.5 oz ball will make a 10 inch tortilla and a 3.5 oz ball will make 8 inch tortillas. The 4.5 oz size yielded 9 tortillas.
  • Return to bowl, cover and let rest for 30 minutes.
  • If you have a tortilla press, press out your tortillas. If you don’t, grab a roller and roll them out on a slightly floured surface until they are almost transparent.
  • In a non-stick skillet on medium-high heat, place tortilla in the center. Cook until blistering appears. Flip it then cook other side until it blisters
  • When tortillas have cooled, place in a freezer bag and store in the fridge for up to a week
